TEN SPEED PRESS was founded in 1970 at Telegraph and Bancroft Way in Berkeley, California. Philip Wood, founder and publisher, began his career with Barnes & Noble in 1962 and in 1965 at Penguin books. He was in charge of Penguin Books in Baltimore and New York in 1969 before founding his own company shortly following the death of Penguin founder, Alan Lane, his mentor.
Ten Speed started with Anybodys Bike Book which is still in print and has sold nearly a million copies. Ten Speed built its worldwide reputation with well-known titles like What Color Is Your Parachute?; wonderful cookbooks like Moosewood Cookbook and the magnificent Charlie Trotter books from Chicago; and such unclassifiable delights as White Trash Cooking, Why Cats Paint, and Flattened Fauna. Ten Speed Press currently publishes 150 books a year under all of its imprints.
CELESTIAL ARTS was acquired in 1983 and it continues to publish a diverse list of health, parenting, and spirituality titles. Famous books include Love Is Letting Go of Fear, Staying Healthy with the Seasons, and five books by wonderful SARK. Celestial Arts also publishes a large list of
posters.
TRICYCLE PRESS, the kids division, was founded by Nicole Geiger in 1993 and is famous for Pretend Soup by Mollie Katzen of Moosewood Cookbook
fame. Tricycle currently is handling such hits as Don’t Laugh at Me, the Edgar & Ellen series, G is for Googol, and Hey, Little Ant.
THE CROSSING PRESS has been publishing since 1974 and is known for Diane Steins many books including Essential Reiki, as well as books on natural healing, spirituality, and pet care, and innovative cookbooks.
Founder Philip Wood is still actively publishing books,
planning future direction, and starting to appreciate the fact that the book business may be in his blood since his great uncle was Charles Scribnerfounder of that famous firm.
